Kassandras participated in “L’Envers du décor” at the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris, with "MÉTOÏKOS".

Consisting of two site-specific architectural and sound installations, these guided the visitor into the very heart of the traditionally inaccessible and "haunted" salons occupied by colonial administrators Paul Raynaud and Hubert Lyautey. Meditative recordings acted as immersive aural facilitators to historical chambers whose hand-painted murals and period furniture transported us to an earlier age.

As guests entered the two rooms on the metal platforms suspended above the floor, they absorbed two soundtracks, curated in Greece by Yparxei Provlima Amalia and Iason Athanasiadis, relating to contemporary population movements and flows.

The Athenian Palimpsest by Iason Athanasiadis

Iason Athanasiadis, a multimedia journalist based in Athens, has assembled an acoustic testimony of the city of Athens based on how the successive waves of emigrants and refugees passing through or settling there shaped the city’s identity.

The Athenian Palimpsest hails Athens, a cement-clad urban dystopia rooted in the ancient city, as it emerges after centuries of parochial obscurity and following a traumatic decade of economic crisis, to become one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

A Greek historian of the city with Albanian roots, a Chinese religious dissident, a Moroccan transsexual, a Greek author and flaneur whose walks act as an excuse to eavesdrop on the city’s underbelly, a Lebanese revolutionary-turned-businessman with Byzantine roots, a Sudanese journalist who first arrived as a student in the city four decades ago, a photojournalist who fled the city she grew up in to try the cashless life on an island, an economic migrant from Mali, a French academic studying squats opened in solidarity with refugees, are just some of those for whom contemporary Athens proved a shelter and a space in which to survive, create and seek enlightenment.
